Tips for your trip
These tips come from people who have already been here. They are the things you learn on your second trip and that help from the first one.
The journey
- Travel carefully, and plan ahead both your route and the toll costs.
- Check the fares on the ADO website to find discounts.
- Make sure your bus company 🚌 has traveler insurance and is listed in Mexico's National Tourism Registry (RNT) ✅.
The weather
- Always check the forecast, but do not rely on it: online weather is not very accurate for our area.
Where to stay
- Book in advance — even months ahead for high season dates such as Christmas 🎄 or New Year.
- ❓ Ask everything you need to know about the lodging before booking.
Vacation houses
- Check that the house is registered and verified ✅ on the Tecolutla, Veracruz Tourist Platform. Do not send advance payments or deposits for an offer you found on Facebook.
- Be honest about the number of people 👨👩👧👦 who will be staying. Services are set up for a given number of guests; talk it through with the owner beforehand.
The touts
- Touts —corredores— add a hidden commission 💸 to the price of your lodging, at least $150.00 MXN per night, just for taking you there, even if you already paid a deposit or booked. Find your lodging on the Tecolutla, Veracruz Tourist Platform or on Google Maps and try to get there on your own.
- They will usually take you to whoever pays them a commission 💸. Keep a critical eye and do not settle for the first option offered to you.
The beach
- Always respect the red flags 🚩 on the beach. You must not swim beyond the limit they mark.
- Always keep an eye on children 👨👩👦. Once in the water, the tide 🌊 moves them along constantly.
- Always carry a small bag for your trash.
- Do not overdo the alcohol. Never get in the sea while drunk.
The beach palapas
- Services and prices vary. Never settle for the first one: palapas downtown are more expensive than those a little further away.
Your money
- Bring some cash 💸 with you for anything unexpected. Tecolutla has ATMs, but they tend to run dry during the holidays.
- Paying by card must not add any extra charge. Ask before paying or taking the service.
The turtles
- If you see a turtle laying eggs 🐢 on our beaches, contact Vida Milenaria right away, stay 10 meters away from her and do not walk around her.
- If you would like to release turtles, contact Vida Milenaria to find out the seasons and times when you can.
Downtown
- Put your trash in the bins 🚮. If there is none nearby, keep it in a bag and take it back to your lodging.
Boat rides
- Always ask for prices at the authorized booths at the pier. If a tout makes you an offer, it is probably at the expense of the service.
- Always wear a life jacket during the ride.
El Tajín
- There are several ways to reach the archaeological site:
- 🚗 By car: here is the route.
- 🚌 By public transport: city bus or shared taxi, on the Tecolutla - Gtz. Zamora - Papantla - El Tajín or Tecolutla - Papantla - El Tajín routes.
- 🚐 With a tour operator, such as Ollin Hibou.
